Welcome to Chhaya – A Safe Haven for Animals
At Chhaya, we believe every life matters – whether it’s a dog in distress, an injured cow, or a bird with a broken wing. Nestled in the peaceful village of Aswathaberia, our animal hospital and rescue shelter have been a beacon of hope since 2008. Under the umbrella of People for the Respect & Care of Animals (PRCA), a registered charitable trust, we work tirelessly to provide medical care, shelter, and love to animals in need.
A Mission of Love and Care
-
Chhaya wasn’t just built – it was born out of love, compassion, and an urgent need to help animals suffering on the streets of Kolkata.
-
Every day, innocent animals face unimaginable hardships. Stray dogs and cows wander through busy roads, often getting hit by speeding vehicles. Some, left in pain, are doused with water by well-meaning but misguided people, hoping they’ll get up. Others, tragically, face cruelty at the hands of humans, subjected to acid attacks or beatings simply because they’re in the way. It became painfully clear – Kolkata needed a place where these animals could be rescued, treated, and cared for. That’s why Chhaya was created.
-
Since 2008, our doors have been open to the most vulnerable creatures, giving them a second chance at life. Our rescue vehicles operate six days a week, responding to distress calls and bringing injured animals to safety. Once healed, many return to the places they call home, while others who cannot survive on the streets find permanent refuge at Chhaya.
-
But we don’t just treat injuries – we also prevent them. Through our Animal Birth Control (ABC) Programme, we humanely manage Kolkata’s stray dog population, reducing suffering and minimizing conflicts between animals and humans.
-
What started with treating just 1-2 dogs a day in makeshift huts has now grown into a full-fledged hospital treating 400-450 dogs, 10-15 goats, and 5-6 cows daily. Over the years, we’ve also rescued and treated horses, birds, monkeys, rabbits, pigs, and even jackals. Chhaya has expanded into a 30,000 sq. ft. sanctuary on a 2.5-acre plot, ensuring that no animal in need is turned away.
