Saving Camels from Illegal Trafficking: Chhaya’s Role in Their Rescue
Despite the Camel Act making the transport and slaughter of camels illegal across India, many are still smuggled into West Bengal for meat every year. These gentle creatures endure inhumane conditions, crammed into trucks, starved, and brutally handled during transportation.
Recently, Jaynagar Police Station in 24 Parganas intercepted a camel being trafficked illegally. The exhausted animal was rescued and immediately brought to Chhaya for safe custody. Here, she received proper food, medical attention, and care until arrangements were made for her safe return to Rajasthan.
A similar case occurred In Jagacha, Howrah, where police intercepted camels being transported under cruel conditions. These camels were placed under Chhaya’s protection, where they were treated for injuries, dehydration, and trauma before being moved back to Rajasthan for rehabilitation.
At Chhaya, we ensure that every rescued camel receives the compassion and care they deserve. While they stay with us, they are given a safe environment, nourishment, and medical attention—a stark contrast to the fate they were being forced into.
These rescues are a reminder of the importance of strict law enforcement and the ongoing fight against illegal camel trafficking. Until every camel is free from suffering, we must continue to raise awareness, strengthen protections, and take action.
