Restoring Dignity to Kolkata’s Canine Companions

From the streets to our sanctuary—comprehensive medical care, rehabilitation, and love for every dog in need.

The Story: Why We Step In

In the bustling streets of Kolkata, dogs are more than just animals; they are part of our community. Yet, they are the most vulnerable to accidents, abuse, and disease. Whether it is a “Pariah” (Indie) suffering from a hit-and-run or a purebred “Pedigree” dog abandoned cruelly by its owners, PRCA | Chhaya serves as their guardian.

We believe every dog deserves a life free from pain. Our Canine Care program is designed to bridge the gap between street-side suffering and a life of dignity.

Core Pillars of Canine Care

We invite you to join us in  Canine Care at Chhaya Animal Hospital.

1

Rescue & Emergency Medical Relief

Our ambulances traverse the city 6 days a week to pick up dogs in distress. From maggot-infested wounds and skin infections to critical fractures and terminal illnesses, our specialized veterinary team provides immediate life-saving interventions.

2

Animal Birth Control (ABC) & Anti-Rabies (ARV)

Following WHO guidelines, we run a robust spay/neuter program to humanely manage the street dog population. Every dog admitted to Chhaya is vaccinated against Rabies, ensuring safety for both the animals and the human community.

3

The Abandoned Pedigree Crisis

It is a heartbreaking reality that many pedigree dogs (Labradors, GSDs, Pugs, etc.) are abandoned when they fall ill or grow old. Unlike street dogs, they lack the survival instincts for the road. We provide a safe haven for these "thrown-away" pets, offering them the specialized diet and emotional rehabilitation they need to trust humans again.

4

Permanent Sanctuary for the ‘Unadoptable’

For dogs with permanent disabilities, blindness, or old age, the streets are no longer a safe option. Chhaya becomes their forever home. With 66 well-ventilated kennels and a dedicated playground, they live out their lives in peace and safety.

Our Facilities for Canines

  • Hygienic Kitchen: Freshly prepared, nutritionally balanced meals are served twice daily in accordance with established dietary standards.
  • In-Patients Ward : 66 Well Ventilated Kennels, dedicated and bio-secure units designed to accommodate dogs diagnosed with contagious conditions such as Cancer, Tumors, Accidental Injuries, Protozoal Injections, Delivery Issues, Renal Issues, Cases of Poisoning and others
  • Enclosures : Permanent Shelters, for the dogs who are abandoned or never taken back from Chhaya.
  • Post-Operative Care: A dedicated space for recovery after ABC surgeries or major operations.
  • The Bathing Station: An antiseptic bath for every new admission to ensure hygiene and comfort.
