Chhaya: A Safe Haven for Abandoned and Injured Horses

In Kolkata’s Maidan area, horse carriages are a booming business, carrying tourists and joyriders through the city’s streets. But when these horses grow old, become blind, or suffer injuries, they are often abandoned on the roads to die, no longer of any use to their owners.

At Chhaya, we have rescued many injured, elderly, and blind horses from across West Bengal, giving them the care and dignity they deserve.

One such heartbreaking case involved an elderly horse in Krishnanagar, whose tail had been brutally chopped off. The wound became severely maggot-infested, causing a terrible smell. Instead of helping, people pelted stones at him, forcing him to wander in pain, looking for relief. When we learned of his condition, our team rushed to the spot with our hydraulic rescue vehicle, brought him to safety, and treated his wounds. Today, he is healing and living peacefully at Chhaya.

Another tragic case was a blind horse found near Victoria Memorial. After years of service, age had taken its toll, and he lost his vision. Instead of caring for him, his owner abandoned him on the streets, where he struggled to find food and avoid traffic. Chhaya stepped in, rescued him, and provided him with a permanent home, where he now lives free from fear and neglect.

These are just a few of the many horses we have saved—once discarded as worthless, now cherished and cared for. Our hydraulic rescue vehicle allows us to reach them in time, ensuring that no suffering animal is left behind.
