Milk, Meat, and Leather: A Vicious Cycle

Milk, Meat, and Leather: A Vicious Cycle

A distressing call from the Detective Department of Howrah City Police set an urgent rescue mission into motion. Reports of trucks overloaded with buffaloes—both adults and juveniles—being transported in the most inhumane conditions revealed a heartbreaking scene. Some of the juveniles had already succumbed to the cruelty, their lifeless bodies discarded like waste. The surviving adults, barely clinging to life, were vomiting blood, trapped in their own filth, awaiting the same fate.

With no time to lose, a total of 46 adult buffaloes and 24 juveniles were immediately rescued and transported to CHHAYA Animal Hospital for emergency care. Over time, we have provided temporary shelter to more than 250 cattle rescued by law enforcement. Each one arrived in pain, but with care and compassion, we helped them heal.

In another recent case, an operation by the Najirgaunj Investigation Centre led to the seizure of 59 cows being illegally transported. The animals were found in a distressing condition, suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and injuries caused by cruel handling. They were immediately brought to CHHAYA, where they are now receiving proper care and treatment.

Despite being deeply woven into religious and cultural traditions, cows are often subjected to unimaginable suffering. Once a female cow is no longer able to produce milk, she is discarded like a machine that has stopped working—often ending up in slaughterhouses. The cycle of exploitation continues unless we choose to break it.

Today, after weeks of dedicated medical attention, the rescued buffaloes have been shifted to the Government Goshala (SLF), where they will continue to receive care and live in safety. The cows rescued from Najirgaunj remain under treatment, recovering from their ordeal.

These rescues are stark reminders of the hidden cruelty behind industries that profit from these innocent lives. Milk is where it starts, and leather is where it ends. Break the cycle.
